The Cross
CENTRAL · Universal
The empty cross — Christ crucified and risen. The single most enduring sign of the Christian household.
"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

We always show the empty cross — risen, gold, clean.
Dove
SPIRIT · Universal
The Holy Spirit — descending at Christ's baptism, hovering over the waters at creation, bringing the olive branch to Noah.
"And, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."

The Lamb
CHRIST · Universal
Christ as Lamb of God — the gentle shepherd-king. We show the lamb at rest, not in sacrifice.
"Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."

Ichthys (Fish)
EARLY-CHURCH · Early Church
The earliest sign Christians used to identify one another. The Greek word for fish (ΙΧΘΥΣ) is an acronym for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.

Vine and Branches
CHRIST · Universal
Christ as the True Vine and his people as the branches. Communion with the Lord pictured as natural, ongoing, fruitful.

Lamp
SCRIPTURE · Universal
The Word of God as light for the path. Also the wise virgins keeping watch with oil prepared.
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

Lit Candle
PRESENCE · Universal
The presence of Christ in the room. A light kept burning in a sanctuary. A prayer continuing after we have left the room.
"I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness."

Olive Branch
PEACE · Old Testament root
The peace of God. The dove returning to Noah with the olive branch — the waters receding, the new world beginning.
"And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off."

Anchor
HOPE · Early Church
Hope as the anchor of the soul. A symbol of steadiness through every storm. Common in early Christian catacomb art.
"Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast."

Shield
ARMOUR-OF-GOD · Universal
The shield of faith, by which all the fiery darts of the wicked are quenched. Part of the whole armour of God.
"Above all, taking the shield of faith."

Crown
CHRIST-THE-KING · Universal
Christ the King of glory — the crown of life given to those who endure. We use the royal crown, never the crown of thorns.
"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life."

Star of Bethlehem
CHRISTMAS · Universal
The star that led the wise men to the manger. A sign that the heavens themselves bore witness to the coming of the Christ.

Halo
SANCTITY · Byzantine, Western Medieval
The golden circle of light surrounding the head of Christ, the saints, and the holy ones — a visual sign of glory and divine presence.
"And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun."

Tree of Life
PARADISE · Universal
The tree in the midst of Eden and again in the New Jerusalem. The hope of the redeemed Creation.
"In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life."

Rainbow
COVENANT · Universal
The sign of God's covenant with Noah and with the earth — that mercy is woven into the very sky.
"I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth."

Wheat
COMMUNION · Universal
The bread of life. The grain of wheat that falls into the ground and dies, and so bears much fruit.
"Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit."

Grape Cluster
COMMUNION · Universal
The cup of blessing — the new covenant in Christ's blood, drunk together at the Lord's table.
"And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it."

Shepherd with Sheep
CHRIST · Early Church
The Good Shepherd, who knoweth his sheep and is known of them. A favourite scene in the catacombs and one of the earliest images of Christ.

Open Bible
SCRIPTURE · Universal
The Word of God, accessible and read. A symbol that the Christian household keeps the scriptures open daily.
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable."

Praying Hands
DEVOTION · Universal
The lifting of the heart to God. Stillness, attention, the household at prayer.
"Pray without ceasing."

Keys
EARLY-CHURCH · Universal
The keys of the kingdom given to Peter — the authority to bind and loose, to open the gospel to all peoples.
"And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven."

The scriptures in their ancient form — the Word given to the prophets and read aloud in the assembly.

Chi-Rho
MONOGRAM · Early Church, Byzantine
The first two letters of the Greek word for Christ — ΧΡ — overlaid. The monogram by which Constantine marked his soldiers, and the early Church its meeting places.

Alpha and Omega
MONOGRAM · Universal
The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, Christ's title for himself — the beginning and the end of all things.
"I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last."

IHS
MONOGRAM · Western Medieval, Modern
The first three letters of Jesus' name in Greek (ΙΗΣ). A favourite monogram of medieval and modern devotion.

Theotokos (Mary, Mother of God)
SAINTS · Byzantine, Catholic, Orthodox
Mary holding the Christ child, gazing at him. The most beloved image in Byzantine iconography — a sign of the Incarnation.

Christ Pantocrator

Christ enthroned as Ruler of All — one hand blessing, the other holding the Gospel. The classical Byzantine image of the risen Lord.

Sun Rays
GLORY · Universal
The divine glory radiating outward. Common in resurrection scenes, transfiguration scenes, and the sacred monograms.

Garden
PARADISE · Universal
Eden, lost. Gethsemane, where Christ prayed. The Garden Tomb, where he rose. A sign that Christian hope is for the renewal of the earth.

Living Water
BAPTISM · Universal
Baptism, the Jordan, the river from the throne of God. A sign of new life and of the Spirit poured out.
"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
